What is an “SUV”:

what is suv and types of suvThe term SUV is the abbreviation of “Sport Utility Vehicle”. It is basically a marketing term for a vehicle which is similar to a station wagon. It is usually known as four wheeler with an ability to be used as an off road vehicle. Not all the four wheelers can be termed as an SUV. SUVs are also known as light trucks but come mostly in the same category of pickup trucks. It serves as a vehicle which can be used as passenger carrying vehicle and as a pickup truck too. It is termed in some countries as an “off-road vehicle” or “four-wheel drive”, often abbreviated as “4WD” or “4×4”, and pronounced as “four-by-four”.

With the passage of time SUVs are losing their prestige and popularity due to excessive gasoline consumption, poor safety, cost and pollution. Despite of all these drawbacks, still SUVs are very popular among families due to their comfortable exterior, extended seating as compared to the other cars and vehicles. They are basically designed for off road use.

Types of SUVs:

Car-Based SUVs and Crossovers:

They are the smallest type of SUVs. They are built on a car-like body and structure with extended interior and addition to the comfort level of passengers. Car based SUVs are typically gain highest rate in overall performance by Consumer Reports when they are compared to other types of SUVs. The models of Crossover SUVs include; Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, Honda CR-V, Ford Edge, and Nissan Murano.

Medium Truck-Based SUVs:

Traditional SUVs are made up of truck like body, having a platform same as pickup platform. They have much more capacity than the cars or crossovers. Most mid size SUVs do not possess independent rear suspension. Truck Based SUVs get lower gas mileage. Most of the SUVs are equipped with a six-cylinder engine, some midsize vehicles have an eight cylinder. Some mid size SUVs models include; Ford Escape and Ford Explorer, Dodge Durango, Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chevy Blazer and Toyota 4Runner.

Large Truck Based SUVs:

The largest SUVs are termed as Truck Based SUVs. Same as Midsize SUVs, the large truck based SUVs are also built on a truck-like body. Large SUVs are considered as perfect and ideal for those drivers who want a high driving position on the road and safety on snowy or slippery road conditions. The large sized SUVs are to be handled same as large sized vans are handled. They are mostly equipped with six or eight cylinder engine which gives them more power. Although it is large but has a capacity of 5 seats only but possess a large space for luggage etc. in the back. In comparison with smaller vehicles, large vehicles face or suffer less damage. Large SUV models include the Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator, GMC Terrain Denali, Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon and Chevy Tahoe.

Uses of SUVs:

SUVs are mostly used as remote areas. They are often driven off roads such as country sides or areas such as Alaska, Middle East, Africa, and some parts of Asia which have limited plain roads and require a vehicle for storage etc. SUVs are mostly used for driving in urban areas. For example, the Hummer H1 was developed from the HMMWV, solely created for the military use of the United States.

Another use of SUVs is that they have much more interior space with great comfort level. SUVs are most preferable vehicles in extreme weather conditions. SUVs are gaining popularity in some areas of Mexico and in the desert areas where drivers may face detours, high water or rough roads.

SUVs are used in recreations and motor sports as they are used to reach far off places where other vehicles can’t work out properly. Modified SUVs also take part in different races. These supportive utility vehicles help tourists to reach far off places otherwise they won’t be able to enjoy the unique areas of the world.
